The figures of Saturday Night Soul press forward through dense layers of acrylic and atmospheric spray. Raised textural relief — built through repeated mark-making and material accumulation — creates a surface that advances and recedes as you move. The figures do not sit on the canvas. They step out of it. At 60 × 48 inches, the scale commands the room the way a crowd commands a dance floor.
In Low Light
When the lights dim, embedded photoluminescent pigment activates a second painting within the first. What was hidden in daylight — the energy beneath the surface, the ancestors behind the figures — becomes visible. Saturday Night Soul exists twice. Two paintings. One canvas.
About the Artist
Michael James
“I make work about what it feels like to carry cultures — plural — in your body. I am my parents. I am my grandparents. I am my ancestors. My work is where my ancestors speak.”
Michael James is an Atlanta-based career artist and visual designer with over a decade of professional experience, including applied design work for well-known Fortune 500 companies. Working under Bout Dat Life LLC, his fine art practice explores Afro-Caribbean identity, rhythm, and cultural memory through bold color, layered mixed media, and expressive mark-making. Each piece is built not just to be seen, but to be felt.
