← Back to WorksThe Cityscape series is painted by a man who has always moved through more than one world at once. Born of American, Jamaican, and Dominican lineage, Michael James grew up at the intersection of cultures the American city keeps in separate neighborhoods — and his work refuses that separation. Uptown Soul, Midtown Soul, and Downtown Soul move through the urban landscape as a single, blended consciousness: the American me that emerges when parents from different worlds choose each other, and their child inherits the full conversation. The figures in these canvases do not represent a community. They carry one — the rhythms, the colors, the motion of a heritage that was never singular. The photoluminescent layer is the argument made visible: underneath the city's divisions, the original frequency — the higher spirit force that connects all of it — has never been interrupted.
