Ancestors Chat Series
← Back to WorksAncestors Chat is the work of a man made at the meeting point of worlds. The son of American and Caribbean parents — Jamaican and Dominican blood blending into an American life — Michael James did not inherit a single culture. He inherited a conversation between cultures, and that conversation speaks through his work in the only language all of them share: rhythm, color, and motion. Saturday Night Soul is not a painting about nightlife. It is a painting about what it feels like to move through a room carrying more than one world in your body — to dance to a rhythm that is simultaneously American and Caribbean, contemporary and ancient, yours and given. The photoluminescent layer reveals what was always present beneath the surface: the higher spirit force that connects every bloodline to the same source, visible only when the modern light steps back.

Saturday Night Soul
2026 · Acrylic, spray paint, and mixed media on canvas with impasto relief and trompe-l’œil dimensionality · 60 × 48 in (152.4 × 121.9 cm)
“Saturday Night Soul is not a painting about nightlife — it is nightlife. Every layer of acrylic, every burst of spray paint, carries the pulse of a city alive after dark.”
In Full Light
The figures press forward through dense layers of acrylic and atmospheric spray. Raised textural relief creates a surface that advances and recedes as you move. At 60 × 48 inches, the scale commands the room the way a crowd commands a dance floor.
In Low Light
The dual-state effect lives in the original — the photoluminescent layer that reveals the ancestral world in darkness. The Embellished Edition is hand-enhanced in the private studio to carry that same effect, supercharged by the artist’s hand. The original is not for sale. The Embellished Edition is the only way to own the dual-state experience.
