Artist Biography

Michael James is an Atlanta-based contemporary painter working in Jamaican-Dominican American narrative figuration. His practice did not emerge from academic lineage or inherited technique — it was built entirely from an interior creative world, a self-generated visual language shaped by ancestral memory, spiritual presence, and the Caribbean and Latino experience in America.

His large-scale canvases are constructed in layered acrylic, spray paint, and mixed media — impasto relief, trompe-l’œil dimensionality, and embedded photoluminescent pigment that activates in darkness, revealing a second painting: the ancestors, present. This dual-state system is without precedent across a body of large-scale figurative work. It is not a technique. It is a theology.

For years, James created and developed his body of work in deliberate privacy — placing works with private collectors who have housed and held the collection by design. He is not an artist who waited to be discovered. He is an original creator who chose the moment of release. That moment is now.

James’s work operates at the intersection of ancestral memory, spiritual presence, and material innovation — transforming urban and interior landscapes into structured visual monuments where the street and the sacred occupy the same plane.

Artist Statement

“I am a Creator. Not just an artist. I do not make paintings. I open channels. I am my ancestors. My work is where they speak.”

I enter the studio the way a practitioner enters meditation — not to produce, but to receive. Each stroke is counted like a bead — deliberate, rhythmic, cumulative. The canvas does not fill up. It opens up. And what comes through is not mine alone.

I am Jamaican. I am Dominican. I am Atlanta. I am the drum, the street, the rhythm, the accumulated memory of everyone who came before me — rendered visible through gesture, surface, and light. My figures are not portraits. They are presences. Color in motion — each one a note, and together they are the song. Built through layered systems of acrylic, texture, and light-reactive pigment that create two paintings on every canvas: one for the waking world, one for what lives beneath it. In daylight, the living frequency. In darkness, the ancestors emerge — not added, but revealed. They were always there. They were always speaking.

The eyes of every figure are portals. They do not lead into my world — they lead into yours. The viewer who meets the gaze of my figures drifts into their own frequency. Their own lineage. Their own memory. The thing they carry that has no name but has always been there.

A decade of structural discipline in UX Design and Front-End Development is not background — it is foundation. The logic, the sequencing, the compositional architecture of every canvas is built with the same precision as the intention behind it.

The practice unfolds through three series: Ancestors Chat, Rhythm Series, and Cityscape Series. Each series is a different entry point into the same truth — that the ancestors are always present, that color has frequency, and that painting is an act of transmission between this world and the one that lives beneath it.
