In Full Light
Downtown Soul is a painting about foundation — the weight of what was built, who built it, and what it cost. The surface is built in grounding layers: deep atmospheric spray establishing the city’s density, acrylic passages carving the figure into the architecture, raised textural relief anchoring the form to the street. The figure does not walk downtown. The figure is the foundation.
In Low Light
After dark, downtown reveals its oldest layer. Photoluminescent pigment embedded in the foundational passages activates a second city: the one that existed before the concrete, before the commerce, before the names on the buildings. The ancestors who laid this ground emerge in the low light, their presence woven into every block. Downtown Soul holds two cities. One canvas.
About the Artist
Michael James
“I make work about what it feels like to carry cultures — plural — in your body. I am my parents. I am my grandparents. I am my ancestors. My work is where my ancestors speak.”
Michael James is an Atlanta-based career artist and visual designer with over a decade of professional experience, including applied design work for well-known Fortune 500 companies. Working under Bout Dat Life LLC, his fine art practice explores Afro-Caribbean identity, rhythm, and cultural memory through bold color, layered mixed media, and expressive mark-making. Each piece is built not just to be seen, but to be felt.
