In Full Light
Midtown Soul is a painting about the middle — the space between arrival and destination, between who you were and who you’re becoming. The surface is built in converging layers: atmospheric spray establishing the city’s tension, acrylic passages carving the figure through the crossroads, raised textural relief lifting the form into the present tense. The figure does not pass through midtown. The figure is the crossroads.
In Low Light
After dark, the midtown streets reveal what daylight obscures. Photoluminescent pigment embedded in the architectural layers activates a second city: the one that existed before the grid, before the development, before the displacement. The ancestors who held this ground emerge in the low light, their presence woven into the city’s middle passage. Midtown Soul holds two cities. One canvas.
About the Artist
Michael James
“I make work about what it feels like to carry cultures — plural — in your body. I am my parents. I am my grandparents. I am my ancestors. My work is where my ancestors speak.”
Michael James is an Atlanta-based career artist and visual designer with over a decade of professional experience, including applied design work for well-known Fortune 500 companies. Working under Bout Dat Life LLC, his fine art practice explores Afro-Caribbean identity, rhythm, and cultural memory through bold color, layered mixed media, and expressive mark-making. Each piece is built not just to be seen, but to be felt.
