The Rhythm Series

Rhythm is not sound. It is memory — the body's oldest language, carried forward through drum, dance, and the hands that refuse to forget.

These three large-scale works form a cohesive body within the BoutDatLife Studio 2026 collection. Each begins as a museum-quality giclée canvas print, then returns to the studio where Michael James applies a second layer by hand — textured acrylic impasto built directly into the figures, the instruments, the movement. No two are identical. Each canvas passes through the artist's hands twice.

In daylight, the embellishments are physical — raised relief on clothing patterns, hair coils, drum surfaces, and the bodies in motion. In darkness, the photoluminescent ground activates, and the ancestral presence that was always there reveals itself.

Ancestors Chat — Saturday Night Soul leads the series as its anchor. Rhythm of the Drum — Her Rhythm and His Beat complete it. Acquired together, the three form a triptych installation — a single conversation across three canvases.
